Indiana Jones 5 Begins Filming Next Week | Screen Rant
Indiana Jones 5 reportedly starts filming next week. After Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, they wasted no time producing a bevy of new Star Wars content, but things haven't gone so smoothly for Lucasfilm's other prominent franchise. An Indiana Jones 5 was officially announced in 2016, with Steven Spielberg set to direct Harrison Ford in another adventure. Unfortunately, the movie encountered numerous setbacks during pre-production, getting passed between multiple writers and even going through a director change. Logan's James Mangold is now the one calling the shots.
More recently, Indiana Jones 5 has gotten back on track. Most notably, Mangold has rounded out the movie's supporting cast, which includes big names like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, and more. Another encouraging development was when Ford was spotted in the U.K., arriving there ahead of filming. That suggested principal photography would begin soon, and now it's been revealed when the cameras start rolling.
According to Deadline, Indiana Jones 5 starts filming in the U.K. next week. Production is set to take place at Pinewood Studios and "other locations." It's unknown how long shooting will last.
Indiana Jones 5 is currently slated for release in July 2022, so this gives Mangold and company over a year to complete the film. That's a comparable timeline to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which started production in June 2007 and hit theaters in May 2008. Barring any unforeseen issues, Indiana Jones 5 should be able to stay on schedule and come out next summer. That said, it certainly won't be an easy task. The Indiana Jones films are known for their thrilling action sequences and set pieces, meaning it should be a demanding shoot. James Gunn recently said Guardians of the Galaxy 3's 2023 release date is cutting things close, so Mangold does have his work cut out for him with Indiana Jones 5's premiere much sooner.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a rather divisive outing for the franchise, so there's pressure on Indiana Jones 5 to be something of a return to form. This will almost assuredly be Ford's final performance as the iconic archeologist, and everyone involved wants to see him go off on a high note. With that in mind, it's a good thing Lucasfilm didn't rush development and instead took their time until they had the right creative team in place. It will be interesting to see what Mangold delivers as fresh blood in the director's chair. His Logan is one of the most acclaimed comic book adaptations of all-time, so it's exciting to see him lend his talents to another beloved Hollywood property.
