Returning to the air today via video link from London, the journalist told viewers that she’d been absent due to personal health issues, undergoing major surgery and now facing months of chemotherapy.

She remained optimistic as she gave the matter-of-fact update ahead of talking through worldwide news on CNN today – which she shared a clip of to her Twitter page.

Piers, 56, retweeted the video and added: “Very sorry to hear this, Christiane, but no surprise to see you tackling cancer head-on with the same inspirational strength, fortitude & optimism that you tackle everything in life.

“I wish you every success with your treatment.”

On air, Christiane bravely shared: “I want to first thank Bianna Golodryga and the whole team for holding down the fort so well over the last four weeks, which have been a bit of a rollercoaster for me.

“Because during that time, like millions of women around the world, I had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

“I’ve had successful major surgery to remove it and I’m now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the very best long-term prognosis. And, I’m confident.

“I’m also fortunate to have health insurance through work, and incredible doctors who are treating me in a country underpinned by the brilliant NHS.

“I’m telling you this in the interest of transparency, but in truth really in a shout out to early diagnosis. To urge women to educate themselves on this disease.

“To get all the regular screenings and scans that you can, to always listen to your bodies and, of course, to ensure that you legitimate medical concerns are not dismissed or diminished.”

She candidly concluded: “So that’s my news, now let’s get to the news.”

Piers worked at CNN for three years alongside Christiane, whose incredible career spans decades.
