Richard Burton RIP

It is with sadness that we have recently learnt of the passing of stalwart supporter Richard Burton, many of our older fans will remember what a force he was at Rockingham Road, eventually setting up the Vice Presidents (above) during the more difficult times.

Richard was a sort of “off the record” Director come Commercial Manager of the Club in the late 1980’s and subsequently made donations, even though he no longer hardly ever attended matches. Many old fans will recall him organising Poppies merchandise and a sales stall at the Chamber of Trade Exhibitions at Wicksteed Park.He was also the brain behind the Poppies FA Cup song competition of 1990/91 season.

Chairman David Mahoney said, “It was with great sorrow that I heard the news that Richard had passed away and I send my love and support to his family and friends.  Richard has been involved with the club for decades and the passion he held for the Poppies was apparent every time you spoke with him.  I enjoyed several conversations with him over the past 3 or 4 seasons and appreciated his support during the hard times, his unwavering encouragement and his never ending energy and love for the club.  Richard made several contributions to the club and one of our marquees was named after him, which I know he was so proud of.  He was a true gentleman.”
