Boris Johnson must grasp the nettle and deliver the freedom we all yearn for

0

WE’VE done as told for the past 15 months, but now it has clearly worn thin.

Our poll reveals a third of people admit restrictions left them financially worse off — and half say their health has suffered.

The figures sharply demonstrate the real human cost of imposing curfews.

They paint a picture of a nation stressed at having their lives on hold for so long

Grafters have suffered more than pen-pushers who can work from home.

There is no totally risk-free moment to end the lockdown.

But latest figures show 60 per cent of the population has now had two jabs, which reduce the chance of being hospitalised by 90 per cent.

We clearly can’t go on like this forever.

But alarmingly, many people actually think we will.

More than a quarter of people now fear that Britain will never be completely free of anti-Covid restrictions.

The PM has told us that “freedom day” will come on July 19.

But our poll says that only eight per cent believe him.

Our cities and towns need people to go back to work so they can thrive.

That way productivity will improve, jobs will be saved and the country will get moving again.

Small businesses from sandwich shops to dry cleaners depend on bustling town centres.

We cannot afford to stay locked down any longer.

That is why Boris must grasp the nettle and deliver the freedom we all yearn for.

Russia’s Vladi cheek

KREMLIN hard man Vladimir Putin has an almighty cheek.

The Russian President has masterminded a series of outrages on foreign soil, including the Skripals’ poisoning in Salisbury.

With no sign of him handing the perpetrators over, there is no hope of justice in this indiscriminate attack on home soil.

US President Joe Biden was right to spell out last week to Putin that online attacks on 16 prize American assets would prompt immediate retaliation.

Only last week, the G7 countries demanded Russia take action against their criminal networks.

Channels of communication must stay open between the West and Russia.

But demands for a strengthened Russian diplomatic force in this country — otherwise known as spies — are laughable.

Encouragingly, there is no sign that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will fall for these overtures.

Former KGB tyrant Putin is not to be trusted in any circumstances.

The West cannot afford to show any weakness in dealing with this Russian bully.
