Boba Fett Was Told the Sarlacc Would Eat Him Before Return of the Jedi

0

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #1!

Marvel's ongoing War of the Bounty Hunters event has made Boba Fett the most wanted man in the Star Wars universe, but as Fett's rivals attempt to take him down, readers learn that he ignored a prophecy that might have saved him from being eaten by the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi. While Boba Fett canonically survived being pushed into Jabba the Hutt's Sarlacc pit by Han Solo (allowing for his recent return on The Mandalorian), the moment was originally taken to be the character's death, marking his exit from the movie series (as it currently stands) and acting as a major black mark on his reputation.

But before Fett fought his way free from the Sarlacc pit, he was the most renowned bounty hunter in the galaxy - so renowned that crime boss Jabba the Hutt paid him handsomely for the capture and delivery of Han Solo, who was frozen in carbonite to be displayed in the intergalactic gangster's palace. Sadly, War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha revealed that Solo was stolen from Fett before he could be delivered, kicking off a wide-reaching conflict as different factions fought to take ownership of the body. Sadly for Boba, Jabba didn't initially buy his excuse, offering an open bounty on Fett that instantly put him in the crosshairs of bounty hunters all over the galaxy.

Two of the first to try their luck are 4-LOM and Zuckuss. Boba quickly dispatches the duo thanks to canny use of his gauntlets (which are connected to his other weapons), taking 4-LOM's head to plug into his ship's systems for more information. But it's actually Zuckuss who has the information Fett really needs. Zuckuss is a Gand findsman, using meditation, religious ritual, and Force sensitivity to catch glimpses of the future. As he hangs from a ledge, he tries to barter for his survival, offering to tell Boba Fett his future. "Everything is red," Zuckuss insists, "a sea of red, and you are drowning in it!" To any Star Wars fan, it's clear that Zuckuss is having a vision of Fett within the Sarlacc, but the bounty hunter has little time for prophecy, replying, "Not interested," before kicking Zuckuss to his apparent death.

It's hilarious to know that Boba Fett was warned about his most crushing defeat long before it happened, and could even have heard more if he'd had the inclination not even to spare Zuckuss, but simply to allow his rival to keep talking. Unfortunately for Zuckuss, Fett took the bounty hunters' attack on his ship as a sign of disrespect, which is likely what left him annoyed enough to ignore a being with proven precognitive abilities.

As he leaves for Jabba's palace, fans know that Boba Fett will somehow be successful in delivering Han Solo to the Hutt, with the charm of War of the Bounty Hunters being what happens along the way, and how the deadly bounty hunter reclaims his prize. But Star Wars fans also know the gnashing maw of the Sarlacc is waiting in Boba Fett's future, and it will be hard for them to watch Return of the Jedi ever again without reflecting that Boba deserves his humiliating cinematic loss even more than they already assumed.
