Gotham City Is A Major Character In Titans Season 3 | Screen Rant
Titans season 3 will bring Nightwing and the rest of the crew back to Gotham City, which showrunner Greg Walker says is a huge part of the story.
Gotham City will be a major character in Titans season 3, according to the series’ showrunner. The upcoming season – the show’s first to premiere on HBO Max – will see Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites), Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft), Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), and the rest of the crew journeying back to Gotham in their continued battle against crime. Titans season 3 is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on August 12.
Through its first two season, Titans has spent most of its time in real-world locations like San Francisco and Detroit. The story largely focuses on heroes who’ve either fallen from grace or left their old lives behind, though they all eventually return to the action after reuniting with one another. The specters of Batman and Gotham as a whole have continuously loomed in the background of the series, however. Now, in season 3, the crew will finally be spending some significant time there.
According to Titans showrunner Greg Walker, Gotham will be a lot more than just a location in season 3. Speaking with EW, Walker described Gotham as being one of the core characters of season 3, suggesting that a lot of old Batman lore could be coming back to the surface of the story. Walker's comments also suggest an interest in mining the location as much as Titans did with the show's time in the aforementioned cities like San Francisco and Detroit, both of which have their own unique characteristics. "In our story with Dick returning to Gotham - and Gotham is a huge character this season - it's about sons and daughters, [and] stepping into the shadow of your parents,” Walker said.
The return to Gotham sets up a ton of possibilities for Titans, both for the existing characters and the many classic Batman heroes and villains who could show up. Scarecrow is already confirmed to be a primary villain in season 3, played by Mad Men alum Vincent Kartheiser, and GCPD commissioner Barbara Gordon will also join the main cast, played by Savannah Welch. The Titans season 3 trailer has also teased the return of the Joker, which could be particularly interesting given Jason Todd/Red Hood’s role in the show.
In the season 3 trailer, Dick is heard describing Gotham in grim terms. “This city breeds a special class of criminal,” he says. “People die here. People like us.” Nightwing’s return means that he’ll have to grapple with his relationship with Bruce Wayne in addition to his struggles against the villains of the city. Titans has never shied away from diving deep into the traumas and hidden psyches of its characters, and that trend seems like it will continue in a big way when the gang reaches Gotham. Titans season 3 premieres on HBO Max on August 12.
