Mark Hamill Reacts to Carrie Fisher Getting a Hollywood Walk of Fame Star
Star Wars’ Mark Hamill has taken to social media to provide a touching, and slightly cheeky, tribute to his late co-star Carrie Fisher after it was announced that she would be getting her posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hamill, who first met Fisher while filming 1977’s original Star Wars, remained close to the actress he affectionately refers to as his “space sis.” Shortly after Fisher died in 2016, a devoted fan had even made Fisher her own makeshift star on the infamous Walk of Fame until she received an official star of her own.
She is best known as the fearless Princess Leia, but Fisher’s legacy spans over 40 years of film and television credits. She is also the author of four novels, three non-fiction books, multiple stage plays/screenplays, and a tireless advocate for mental health and addiction recovery. While returning home following the European leg of her book tour for her memoir The Princess Diarist, Fisher suffered a medical emergency on a flight from London to Los Angeles. After four days in intensive care, Fisher passed on December 27, 2016, leaving millions of devoted fans in mourning.
Fisher was recently selected by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who manages the Walk of Fame, to be the latest amongst a group of 38 honorees to receive their own official stars. Hamill, who has been one of the loudest voices petitioning to get Fisher her star since her passing, took to Twitter to give “much love & a very 1-finger salute” to his friend and former co-star when he heard the news. Check out his original reaction below:
Fisher’s tragic loss was a major blow not only for Star Wars fans but for countless others whose lives were touched by her fearlessness, humor, and boundless compassion. Hamill offering his dear friend, a “special 1-finger salute” is the perfect tribute to someone with whom he had spent a lifetime trading friendly barbs and witticisms. Jokes aside, no doubt this decision is a moment of enormous relief for Hamill, who previously encouraged fans to lobby for Fisher’s official recognition.
In 2018 Hamill had sought to try and get Fisher’s star placed in time for the release of The Rise of Skywalker, the final film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Even though Fisher had passed before production on the film started, director J.J. Abrams was able to include her character using unused footage that was filmed for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. As it turns out, however, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has a five-year rule when awarding stars posthumously. Now that it is finally official, both Hamill and millions of fans worldwide can rejoice that their Princess is finally receiving the recognition she so clearly deserves.
