Is T-Mobile 55+ A Good Deal? What You Need To Know | Screen Rant
T-Mobile offers a wide array of plans for smartphones, including ones that are exclusively for people 55 years or older. While the plans themselves are virtually indistinguishable from T-Mobile’s regular offerings, they’re also substantially cheaper than what’s typically available.
Shopping for smartphone plans can be a daunting task and, for all the things T-Mobile does well, it’s no exception to this rule. The three main plans are Essentials, Magenta, and Magenta MAX. These are the ones that anyone can sign up for, but T-Mobile also offers special pricing for active military, veterans, first responders, and — as mentioned above — people that are 55 and older. It’s not quite as confusing as what’s found with AT&T and Verizon, but it’s still a lot to take in at once.
In the case of T-Mobile’s 55+ plans, the short answer is that they’re fantastic deals for anyone who can take advantage of them. For one line of service, pricing works out as follows: $40/month for Essentials 55+, $50/month for Magenta 55+, and $65/month for Magenta MAX 55+. For the ‘normal’ versions of these plans, T-Mobile charges $60/month, $70/month, and $85/month, respectively. That’s a saving of $20 per month each — or $240 every year. Furthermore, these savings are made even greater as more lines are added to an account. Two lines of Magenta 55+ totals $70/month, compared to two lines of the regular Magenta plan for $120/month.
There’s no doubt that the 55+ plans are a good deal, but what exactly does T-Mobile include with each one? For starters, all three plans come with many of the same basic features — including unlimited talk and text, 5G access at no extra cost, free scam protection, international texting, no contracts, free stuff every week with T-Mobile Tuesdays, and direct access to a ‘dedicated customer service team.’ That speaks volumes to the cheapest Essentials 55+ option, though it does come with some limitations compared to the other plans. Essentials 55+ only supports SD streaming, is limited to 3G mobile hotspot data, and gets 2G data in Mexico and Canada.
Stepping up to Magenta 55+, there are a few notable upgrades for shoppers to take note of. Magenta 55+ comes with data/texting access in 210+ countries, 5GB of 4G LTE hotspot data, and 5GB of 4G data in Mexico and Canada. It also includes a free Netflix Basic plan, one hour of in-flight Wi-Fi, and bundles taxes/fees in the listed prices (something Essentials 55+ does not). Finally, for folks that want the very best of what T-Mobile has to offer, there’s Magenta MAX 55+. Magenta MAX 55+ users are treated to 2x the data speed in those 210+ international countries, up to 4K UHD streaming, 40GB of LTE hotspot data, a free Netflix Basic or Standard plan, unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi, and won’t have their data slowed down based on usage — something Magenta 55+ and Essentials 55+ are susceptible to.
For anyone interested in signing up for a T-Mobile 55+ plan, new customers need to visit their local T-Mobile store and confirm their age with a government-issued ID. If someone is already an existing T-Mobile customer, they can sign up for a 55+ plan just by calling 1-800-T-MOBILE. T-Mobile also notes that only the primary account holder needs to show proof of their age. Up to two other lines can be added without proof of ID, meaning older parents could share their 55+ plans with their kids so everyone can take advantage of the available savings.
