CRUSHERS OUTLAST WILD THINGS IN EXTRAS
A pair of extra-inning battles highlighted Saturday’s busy day in the Frontier League. Here is how it all went down:
The Florence Y’alls took both games of a doubleheader against Équipe Québec, with game one being a continuation of the two teams’ contest yesterday that was suspended due to rain. The first game ended as a 20-3 blowout win for the Y’alls. Florence held a 10-2 lead Friday, which included two Taylor Bryant home runs, before finishing the game Saturday. They would add ten more runs Saturday. In the second game, Florence edged out Équipe Québec for the 4-3 win. Chad Sedio doubled home a run and Trevor Craport hit a home run to give Florence an early 3-0 lead. Équipe Québec responded with a Ruben Castro two-run home run, but Taylor Bryant hit an RBI double in the bottom half to give the Y’alls a 4-2 lead. Québec’s Jonathan Lacroix hit an RBI single, bringing the game within one in the seventh, but then Johnathan Tripp closed the game out with a four-out save.
The Southern Illinois Miners shut out the Schaumburg Boomers 6-0 Saturday night after a strong pitching effort. John Cable singled in a run in the second, and Yeltsin Gudiño’s single in the third scored another. Cable struck with an RBI double in the fourth and the sixth. Ethan Owens then earned his first professional RBI with a single to make it 5-0. Gudiño homered in the seventh to cap the scoring. Michael Austin, Stevie Ledesma, Ryan Miller and Joey Pulido combined for the shutout, with Ledesma earning the win in relief.
The Evansville Otters beat the Windy City ThunderBolts 7-1 after scoring seven unanswered runs. Brynn Martinez hit an RBI groundout in the third to give the Bolts a lead. Evansville’s Andy DeJesus plated one on a sac fly in the bottom half, and in the fourth, a run scored on an error on a fly ball in the infield. A two-run home run from Riley Krane gave the Otters a 4-1 lead, and in the seventh Krane and J.R. Smith both got RBI hits to put the game out of reach. Austin Gossmann pitched seven innings in the win, giving up the lone run in the third.
The Sussex County Miners defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats 8-5. Cito Culver hit a single to drive in a run in the first, which was followed by an Audy Ciriaco two-run home run. Sussex County added to their lead in the second on a Jackie Urbaez triple and a Nilo Rijo single in the third. Tri-City scored two in the bottom half of the third on an Oscar Campos double and a Juan Silverio single. They’d add two more in the sixth on a Chris Kwitzer home run and one in the seventh on a wild pitch. The Miners would add one run in the eighth and ninth, with a Daniel Herrera single in the eighth and a Martin Figueroa solo home run in the ninth to cap the scoring.
The Joliet Slammers took the game from the Gateway Grizzlies, winning 6-3. Chase Vallot’s second inning home run gave Gateway the early lead 1-0. Dustin Woodcock’s two-run double drove in two more to make it 3-0. Joliet answered with a Jarrett Rindfleisch solo home run, a Tyler Depreta-Johnson RBI single and an RBI fielder’s choice from Alonzo Jones Jr all tying the game at 3. After nine innings, the game was still tied. In the tenth, Brian Parreira hit a three-run home run to give the Slammers the 6-3 lead for good. Trevor Charpie earned the win in 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Lake Erie Crushers beat the Washington Wild Things 8-6 in extra innings. Washington scored first with an Andrew Czech solo home run and a Bralin Jackson sacrifice fly. Lake Erie got two back with a Brody Wofford two-run home run in the sixth. The Crushers got three more with two scoring on wild pitches in the seventh to make it 5-2. The Wild Things fought back, however, scoring two on a single from Andrew Sohn and one on an RBI infield hit from Joe Campagna. The game went to extra innings where Lake Erie plated three with an RBI double by Connor Oliver, a single by Zack Gray, and a sacrifice fly by Isaac Benard. Washington got one back in the home half, but were unable to come back a second time.
