US says it will judge outcome of summit with Russia by its behaviour

The United States will judge the outcome of a summit with Russia by Moscow’s behavior, US presidential national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday

He was asked on CNN why the White House was optimistic about the outcome of the summit that Russia would change its behaviour. Sullivan replied that President Joe Biden said no such thing.

“He said specifically that the quality of the pudding is determined by taste, that is, in the next six to 12 months we will see in deed, not in words or commitments or sign language, whether we are on a better path as far as US-Russia relations are concerned”, –  Sullivan said.

The adviser stressed that “he (Biden) is not taking anything for granted as a result of the meeting”.

“Confident is not the right word, optimistic is not the right word. What’s important is verification, an opportunity to see if the relationship can really move to a more stable and predictable basis”, – Sullivan concluded.

The summit between the two presidents, Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin, took place in Geneva on 16 June.
