Daytime Fireworks At The Yard
That didn’t take long. Following Friday’s win, the Baltimore Orioles reverted to their recent losing ways on Saturday. The team dropped the game 10-7 to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Dean Kremer started and gave the Orioles a quality start. The right-hander allowed 2 runs, both first inning solo homeruns, on 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6 over 6.0 innings pitched. He left the game with a 5-2 lead that the Birds extended to 6-2 in the home half of the 6th.
The bullpen quartet of Tanner Scott, Hunter Harvey, Paul Fry and Tyler Wells could not duplicate their performances from Friday. Scott allowed 1 run on 1 hit while walking 1 and striking out 1 in the 7th. Harvey gave up a Marcus Semien homerun and struck out 1 in the 8th. Fry (0.2 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K) and Wells (0.1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 K) let the lead implode in the 9th.
Ryan Mountcastle and Cedric Mullins put on their Camden Yards version of Homerun Derby. Mountcastle homered in the 2nd inning and Mullins matched that in the 3rd. Mountcastle homered again in both the 4th and 6th innings to finish the day 4 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI. Mullins added a second homerun in the 7th and finished 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.
DJ Stewart (1 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI) preceded Mountcastle’s 4th inning homerun with one of his own that traveled 437 feet. Maikel Franco (0 for 3) paid the price for those back-to-back homers by getting hit in the left shoulder area by an Alek Manoah pitch. The benches emptied as did the bullpens, resulting in a lot of pushing, shoving and heated words; Franco did have to be restrained by Freddy Galvis. Manager Brandon Hyde came close to going at it with Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo before cooler heads prevailed. In the end, Manoah was ejected for what was deemed an intentional hit on Franco.
Six Orioles homeruns and the team still couldn’t win.
