Turner & Hooch Trailer Reveals What Happened To Tom Hanks’ Character

0

Disney+ debuts an official trailer for their upcoming Turner & Hooch TV reboot series that reveals what happened to Tom Hanks' character. The new series is based on the 1989 film of the same name that starred Hanks as investigator Scott Turner, who is forced to dog-sit the loveable Hooch after the canine witnesses the murder of his owner. The new Disney+ show, which will run for 12 episodes (released weekly) starting on July 21, stars Josh Peck as one of the title characters, picking up after the events of the original movie.

In the 1989 film, Hanks' character is straight-laced and follows a meticulous routine and lifestyle, until he becomes owner of the unruly Hooch. Throughout the movie, Hooch's destructive tendencies greatly disrupts Turner's daily routine, forcing the detective to change and adapt, which ultimately ends up being for the better. At the end of the flick, Hooch suffers a mortal wound that eventually leads to his death, but not before Turner gives him a tearful goodbye. While the ending is bittersweet, it also gives birth to a new litter of puppies, whom Turner owns, with one of the puppies looking and acting exactly like Hooch. Disney gave a first look at the new Turner & Hooch series back in April, but how Hanks' character was going to fit in it was not yet known at that time.

Disney via their Disney+ YouTube channel debuts an official trailer for the upcoming Turner & Hooch series that reveals what happened to Hanks' character after the original movie. On numerous occasions throughout the trailer, it is revealed that Hanks' character has passed away. However, how he passed away is not yet known. View the entire trailer below:

From the trailer it's clear that rather than revamping the original story, the new Turner & Hooch series will pick up years after the events of the film. Peck will play the son of Hank's character, Scott Turner Jr., who is a U.S. Marshall and inherits the big unruly dog, Hooch, after the death of his father. Similarly to his father, Turner is completely unprepared to take responsibility for the untrained animal. However, as Hooch helps uncover possible foul play surrounding the death of Turner's father, Turner soon discovers that his canine partner is exactly what he needed in life, much like how the original Hooch helped the elder Turner grow for the better.

Continuing the story of the original film, rather than completely rebooting the series, is a very interesting direction. The 1989 movie was a box office hit, earning $71 million against a $13 million budget, which helped make it into a beloved flick that has endured pop culture references even to this day. Acknowledging the events of this original story will help the series capture nostalgic ties and attract older viewers familiar with the movie. What will be interesting is if the new series ever shows flashbacks from the original film, particularly any parallels that may exist between Hanks' character and Peck's character. One thing is for sure, though, if the new Turner & Hooch series can capture the emotional moments from the original film (particularly the ending), then it will definitely be a hit.
