Miami Dade Mayor: 159 People Missing, Four Dead, After Condo Collapse Disaster
MIAMI—Rescue crews were painstakingly sifting through piles of rubble and listening for any sounds of human life on Friday as the search for survivors of a Miami-area condo collapse grew increasingly dire.
As many as 159 people remain missing more than 24 hours after an entire side of a the block abruptly collapsed, according to Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. The death toll stands at four—but Cava made it clear that the number was certain to rise over the coming hours and days.
The early morning catastrophe in Surfside, just north of Miami Beach, saw over 50 apartment units in the high-rise block come crashing to the ground.
