CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ American Public Education Inc. (APEI) on Monday reported second-quarter profit of $531,000.

The Charles Town, West Virginia-based company said it had net income of 3 cents per share.

The results did not meet Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 5 cents per share.

The for-profit education company posted revenue of $78 million in the period, also missing Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $78.7 million.

American Public Education shares have declined roughly 5% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $29.01, a decline of nearly 5% in the last 12 months.
