Man charged in assault and death of Springfield man
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Springfield man has been charged with second-degree murder after a man who was assaulted last week died, police said.
Jacob DeJong, 23, was charged Wednesday in the death of 74-year-old Larry Woods. Police said Woods and DeJong fought on Aug. 25 at a Springfield apartment complex. Woods died on Tuesday.
Court documents allege the fight began because DeJong became upset with Woods for being disrespectful to Woods' female roommate. At one point, DeJong knocked Woods down and stomped on his head before fleeing the scene, according to the documents.
Woods might have had a knife during the altercation, The Springfield News-Leader reported.
DeJong was arrested Tuesday and refused to speak with detectives about the case. He is being held in the Greene County Jail. Online court records do not name an attorney for Woods.
