Back Bassett as season nears its end!
The start of April means three things: the football season is nearing its end, the evenings are getting longer and the weather should – at least in theory – be better. With all that in mind, April is the perfect time to get behind Royal Wootton Bassett Town's teams, with the club's senior men's sides in particular need of your support!
Men's First Team
While Bassett are more than likely to finish the Hellenic League Premier Division season in 12th place, there is still pride, local bragging rights and potential cup success for Sam Collier's side to play for in April.
Bassett have three fixtures still to play – all of which are at home.
And that number will rise by at least one if Bassett defeat Wiltshire rivals Bradford Town in their Bluefin Sports Hellenic League Challenge Cup third round tie on Tuesday 5 March (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 7.45pm kick off).
In addition to that match, Bassett are set to be involved in a bumper Easter weekend of action, with two derby contests across the weekend.
On Good Friday, Shrivenham are the visitors to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground (7.45pm kick off) in Bassett's penultimate Hellenic League Premier Division match of the season. Having triumphed 1-0 away from home against Shrivenham back in August and recently defeated them 3-0 in the cup, Bassett will be looking to make it a hat trick of wins against their rivals when they meet.
The club has designated this game as a Kick It Out fixture. As a Kick It Out Equality Chartered Club, Bassett will be raising awareness of the organisation's important work challenging discrimination in football on the evening of the match.
Then, on Easter Sunday Bassett conclude their campaign with the visit of Wiltshire rivals Corsham Town (Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, midday kick off) in a contest that is part of the Hellenic League's Groundhop Weekend.
A big crowd is expected – and they will hopefully see Bassett finish their season on a high and avenge a 3-0 defeat suffered against Corsham in the reverse fixture back in November.
In addition to being part of the league's Groundhop Weeked, the club has designated this match as a #HerGameToo fixture. The club will use this contest to promote #HerGameToo and its message, with free entry for women and girls, as well as activities to win #HerGameToo merchandise.
The match will also be preceded by an Easter Egg Hunt organised by the club around the facility. The event will take place from 10-12am. An entry fee of £5 will apply, with this including a chocolate prize, entry to the match against Corsham (covering one adult and one under 16) as well as the chance to win a chocolate hamper.
Admission for these matches is (unless otherwise stated above) £6 for adults, £3 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.
Development Team
Bassett's Development team enter the final month of the season battling it out with Pewsey Vale for the Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division title, with Steve Yeardley's side having seven important fixtures left to go.
Bassett begin the run in with a trip to Melksham Town Reserves this Saturday (3pm kick off), before playing three consecutive home games.
On Wednesday 6 April, Marlborough Town are the visitors to the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground (7.30pm kick off). On Saturday 9 April (3pm), Bassett host Frome Collegians. Then on Wednesday 13 April (7.30pm) the team face near neighbours Stratton Juniors.
After that series of games, the Development team finish the season with a trio of tough away matches.
That road spell begins with a trip to Trowbridge Town – who are challenging for a top three finish – on Saturday 16 April (3pm). Bassett then face title rivals Pewsey a week later (Saturday 23 April, 3pm) before their final match away at Salisbury Development (Saturday 30 April, 3pm).
Here's hoping the Development side can match the First Team's achievement back in 1987-88 and be crowned champions in the top tier of men's football in Wiltshire.
They are certainly more likely to do so with your support behind them – so please do make sure to come along to their fixtures!
Admission for home Development team matches is £3 for adults, £3 for concessions and free for RWBTFC youth members.
