NFL Head Coach Calls Luke Getsy A “Terrific” Score For The Bears
Nathaniel Hackett has been around the NFL for a long time. Since 2006, he has worked with four different NFL organizations with a pit stop in college along the way. So he’s spent time with several other coaches. That includes new Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. They spent three seasons together in Green Bay, reaching two NFC championship games and helping Aaron Rodgers secure back-to-back MVP awards.
So it is hardly a surprise that the new Denver Broncos head coach has a high opinion of his former colleague. One might even say the opinion is a little over the top. Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune spoke with Hackett at the NFL owners meetings in West Palm Beach. When the subject of Getsy came up, the coach couldn’t contain his enthusiasm.
“Oh, man!” Hackett said. “Chicago got one of the greatest of all time!”
“Amazing person, first and foremost,” he said. “Bright, driven, terrific coach.”
Now anybody that knows Hackett understands he’s a very positive person.
Even so, he made it crystal clear that it wasn’t bias that elicited his response. Personal affection aside, he genuinely believes Getsy is destined for big things in the future. Not only is he innovative, but he separates himself with his ability to communicate. Not just with players but his fellow coaches too. Such traits are pivotal to success in this sport. Hackett believes the Bears coordinator will combine imagination with a practical teaching style that instantly helps his players improve.
“Luke is great with that,” Hackett said. “We always talked that imagination is the only thing that limits us. So for the past three years, we were always searching and constantly trying to find unique, fun things to take us forward — from motions to shifts to new concepts. That’s naturally the way things ran.
“But then you have to develop a teaching style that resonates. And Luke has that. I’m excited to see what he does with this next opportunity.”
Time will tell. Bears fans have heard such optimism before. The truth is Luke Getsy has plenty to prove. During his rise in Green Bay, he had a premium situation, including a Hall of Fame quarterback and multiple All-Pros across the offense. He has none of those things in Chicago. He’ll have to help make them. It starts with determining how high the ceilings are for Justin Fields and Darnell Mooney. Can he get more out of them than Matt Nagy did? If the answer is yes, the Bears could be in great shape.
