I was one of those who had been a critic of Hill in his last years as captain but then last year I started to come back round on him and was very opposed to us letting him go.
Although my criticism of Hill wasn't that he was a bad player, just that he had gone through an inverse Lee Briers journey, where he started his Wire career as the seasoned pro, top 2 or 3 at his position in SL, and then as time went on he transformed more into the raw talent with potential but tendency to let himself get distracted. It was probably because he was feeling the mounting frustration that most of us fans had felt over the way things had gone in recent seasons and that was how it came out. Certainly you couldn't question his commitment.
I think the Hill of 2017 to 2021 was not the same force as the Hill of 2012 to 2016 but he was still one of the better props in SL.
100% agree with this, I view his career with us exactly the same way. The captaincy was a mistake, he was a leader without the armband and the armband seemed to make him think his role in the team had changed and it just hadn't.
I wanted him to stay for this season but as someone has mentioned all things come to an end at some point and we simply need to have the flexibility in the cap to allow for the future in his position. That said if we don't sign a proper replacement prop at the end of the season I will be furious we didn't offer the 2 year contract, we simply need to recruit very, very well in the front row at the end of this season or there is no justification for letting him go.
