How do I know if my flight has been cancelled?

Over the last few days, airports across the UK have experienced disruption due to cancelled flights.

Passengers at Gatwick were spotted napping on luggage carousels amid epic delays – while some holidaymakers missed out on long-awaited summer getaways and destination weddings.

Police were even called to Manchester Airport, and read a statement regarding a cancelled TUI flight to Greece.

Due to the uncertainty, many people due to fly abroad soon from the likes of Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Bristol or Edinburgh will likely be concerned about upcoming flights – either over queues, delays or even unexpected cancellation.

So, how can you know if your flight has been cancelled?

If your flight has been cancelled, you should be contacted by your airline or holiday provider immediately.

This will either be by the email you provided when booking the flight, or you may receive communication via phone.

When contacted, you should be told what options are available for you – such as rebooking on another flight or requesting a refund. Here’s what to do in that scenario.

If you haven’t been contacted but are due to fly soon and are conscious of the recent chaos at UK airports, you can check your flight status using a number of online trackers.

Flight Aware is one of the best known, along with Flight Stats and Flight Radar 24.

You’ll need to input your flight number, ideally. Without that information (which should be clear in your booking email), they may let you use your departure date, time and departure/arrival airports.

As for individual airlines, easyJet has a dedicated flight tracker. Again, make sure you have your exact flight number on hand.

TUI flights can also be tracked online – as can Ryanair, Wizzair, British Airways and many others.

Try typing ‘[airline name] flight tracker’ into Google, and you should be able to find the relevant airline’s flight status page.
