IDs confirmed for three women killed in East Bay collision between Amtrak and car
Details began to emerge Monday about the three people killed a day earlier when a train slammed into their car while they drove across an unmarked railroad crossing near Brentwood.
Three women — two from Dixon and one from Antioch — died in the crash, which came as they were driving down a long dirt driveway to a vineyard property. A fundraiser was being held on the property for the family of a man who had passed away unexpectedly last week. At least four other people were injured in the crash, three of them seriously.
Killed in the crash were Julia Mondragon, 41, of Dixon; Maria Nieves, 72, of Dixon; and Mercedes Regalado, 51, of Antioch, according to the Contra Costa coroner’s office.
A child and two men also were hospitalized with severe injuries, according to the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.
East Contra Costa firefighters were already on their way to the fundraiser — being held at a Bloomfield Vineyards property off Orwood Road near Bixler Road — when they came upon the wreckage of the crash, said Battalion Chief Craig Auzenne.
A four-door sedan carrying the women was going north on the driveway toward the fundraiser when it was hit by a westbound Amtrak train, Auzenne said. The vehicle barreled off the tracks and into a parked SUV about 60 feet away.
None of the 81 passengers or five crew members of the five-car Amtrak train was injured in the collision, Auzenne said. The train came to a stop about a quarter-mile from the site of the crash.
