Want To See A Dead Body? Watch Ex-QB Rip Apart Sam Mustipher

0

Justin Fields earned a fair share of criticism over the past several weeks. At the same time, many people have decried how little help he’s getting from the rest of the offense. The Chicago Bears weren’t able to make sweeping changes this off-season due to insufficient resources. As a result, several holdovers from the Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy era survived. One that fans and media alike are rapidly growing tired of is Sam Mustipher.

The story itself is a nice one. He battled his way into the starting job at Notre Dame and became a fixture for one of the best offensive lines in the country. That wasn’t enough to get him drafted, though. So Mustipher signed with the Bears and, through a series of fortunate breaks, found himself starting again. He remained there for the rest of 2021. GM Ryan Poles didn’t want it to stay that way. He signed Lucas Patrick to take over at center this year.

Those plans fell through when Patrick broke his hand, and then Cody Whitehair injured his knee. Now the Bears are struck with Mustipher as the starter, and it hasn’t been going well. Former QB J.T. O’Sullivan sounded legitimately ill having to watch tape of him from the Vikings game last week. He didn’t hold back.

Defenses have figured out how to attack Sam Mustipher.

It’s becoming apparent each week that he has a rough time handling blitzes. New York caught him off guard several times, and the Vikings also took advantage of him. He’s allowed 10 pressures on the quarterback in the past two games. Playing quarterback in the NFL is hard when your center is getting beat that often. One can only imagine how Poles feels. He’d gone out of his way to ensure Mustipher didn’t play, and it happened regardless.

If nothing else, it reinforces the likelihood Chicago will be active on the offensive line market next off-season. Sam Mustipher is a backup. He always was a backup. The guy deserves credit for toughing it out this long. It’s just painfully obvious how lacking he is in too many areas. The Bears need somebody quicker, stronger, and more aware in the middle. That is not him.
