Manchester United overcame a late onslaught from Crystal Palace to register a 2-1 victory today after Casemiro was dismissed for grabbing Will Hughes by the throat.
A straight red card for Casemiro means he will miss the next three league games.
After the game, Erik ten Hag admitted that Casemiro ‘crossed the line’ but criticised the referee for being inconsistent throughout.
He said (via the Mirror): “Casemiro crossed the line – you saw that.
“However, I’m unhappy with the inconsistent refereeing – not only this game but also [away to] Palace. They elbowed (Lisandro) Martinez and last week with (Christian) Eriksen.
“A lot of other players crossed the line, including some Crystal Palace players. VAR didn’t intervene with them.”
David de Gea posted a hilarious Jose Mourinho gif right after the game, describing his disagreement with the referee’s decision to send Casemiro off.
It remains to be seen if United will appeal against the decision and try to overturn the veteran’s suspension.
Erik ten Hag rightly fumed over poor officiating
The tussle which broke out between Jeffrey Schlupp and Antony attracted a shoving contest between several players, but only Casemiro was shown a red card.
During the same brawl, Ayew had his hand around Fred’s throat but escaped punishment.
Ayew should have been sent for an early shower, as both incidents were similar.
In the reverse fixture, Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta elbowed Lisandro Martinez, but VAR failed to check the incident.
In the recent FA Cup clash against Reading, striker Andy Carroll made some awful challenges. One injured Christian Eriksen, leaving the midfielder out for three months.
Casemiro will now miss three matches through suspension against Leeds United (x2) and Leicester City.
With question marks hanging over Scott McTominay’s fitness, Ten Hag faces a tricky task of deciding how to reshape his midfield.
