Afghan Women’s Voice Should be Heard not Suppressed: EU Mission in Afghanistan

0

The European Union Mission in Afghanistan has called on the Taliban to immediately release Women Rights Activist Parisa Mubariz and her brother arrested in Takhar on Saturday.

Deputy Head of the EU Delegation Raffaella Iodice on Sunday said on Twitter that Parisa was an advocate of the girl’s education campaign, and protesting is the absolute right of every citizen.

Prior to this, UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan Richard Bennett wrote on Twitter and called on the Taliban authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Parisa Mubariz and her brother.

The director of “Asia and Pacific Department” at the European External Action Service European Union said on Twitter that the voice of protesting Afghan women demanding women’s rights to education and human dignity should be heard to repressed.

The Taliban on Saturday stormed Parisa Mubariz’s house, the founder of the ‘Takhar Women Movement’, and arbitrarily arrested the women rights activist and her brother.

Parisa is the head of the Afghanistan Protesting Women’s Coalition in northern Takhar province, and she is the head coach of the women’s Taekwondo team in that province.

Previously also, the Taliban have arbitrarily detained protesting women in Kabul and other provinces of Afghanistan, which prompted nationwide criticism.

Over the past year and a half, the de facto regime of Afghanistan has continuously suppressed women’s protests. Protesting women took to the streets demanding their rights to education and work and chanted “work, bread, freedom”.

Through restrictive policies, the Taliban regime has banned women from working for non-governmental aid organizations, attending educational institutions, or appearing in public places in recent months. These moves have drawn widespread condemnation on national and international levels.

According to the UN and other aid groups, the Taliban-run administration is violating human rights, and the rights of women and girls to education, work, and free movement – which is neither acceptable for the people of Afghanistan nor the international community.
