Mitchell makes his mark to become Fantasy League champion
There's a new name on the RWBTFC Fantasy Football League honours board as Joe Mitchell emphatically claimed the 2022-23 crown!
Mitchell's Above Average Joes racked up a hugely impressive 2,657 points across the season (a figure that put him well within the top 1% of all fantasy players) as he claimed his first title and banished the pain of finishing as runner-up in the RWBTFC League for the past two seasons. He won by a decisive margin too, finishing 54 points clear of nearest rival Ben Brown (2,603). Steven Astin (2,589), winner two seasons ago, claimed third place as he overhauled Jacob Hayden (2,571) in the final game week. There was then a sizeable gap to fifth place Mark Bennett (2,495). Completing the top ten were Nigel Morecroft (2,488), Fred Wellsbury (2,487), Alex Webb (2,479), Chris Cooper (2,476) and Sam Kemmett (2,473). Last season's champion Andy Guppy had to settle for 25th place as he was unable to build on the five titles he has won previously. This season also saw the introduction of a cup competition. Starting in gameweek 31, the final took place over the course of Sunday's final round of Premier League games. And in a closely run affair, Harrison Jack's Obi-Wan Iwobi outfit edged out Ali Wood's The Doomed United 35-34 to lift the trophy. Huge thanks go to the 176 entrants who took part in this year's Fantasy League – that figure is yet another record, eclipsing the 151 who entered in 2021-22. The Fantasy League is always great fun and, importantly, remains free to enter. The league will be up and running again next season for its fourteenth edition – and we look forward to seeing even more participants.
