Weather damage costs billions: How home insurance helps

It’s already been an expensive weather year in the U.S., and we’re only halfway through it. Seven separate weather catastrophes have each caused more than $1 billion in damage during the first six months of the year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). On average, between 1980 and 2022, there were 8.1 billion-dollar weather events in the U.S. — which means we’re on track for a particularly brutal 2023.
