A January 6 rioter got turned in to the FBI by his former probation officer for an entirely different crime, reported NBC News' justice reporter Ryan Reilly.
The details of how Cody Lee Tippett, who was arrested in Columbus, Ohio last week, was exposed came in a filing filed on June 27, and the matter came about as the FBI was investigating a tip on Dustin Martin, another accused Capitol rioter.
"On or about January 17, 2021, a concerned citizen (C-2) provided a tip to the FBI that contained a Facebook post from MARTIN in which MARTIN writes, 'So now I can say I’ve been hit with rubber bullets, bear mace, pepper spray, teargas, and wrestle with Capital Police f**k yeah ‘America Bitches’ I’ll do it all over again too!'" said the filing. "C-2’s tip further said that MARTIN is from Grove City, Ohio, and posted a video of himself inside the U.S. Capitol but deleted it."
While the FBI was looking up Martin's property in Oak Grove, Tippett's name came up in a records search to determine if anyone else lived in the property, and his records showed his face to match that of a previously unidentified man who accompanied Martin. Investigators also uncovered a prior conviction for an OxyContin ring he ran with his family. They then contacted his previous probation officer, who identified him from images.
More than 1,000 people have been charged, convicted, or taken plea agreements in connection with the attack on the Capitol. Most have been charged with misdemeanors like trespassing and unlawful picketing, but several were also charged with assaulting police officers, and the leaders of multiple far-right groups were convicted of seditious conspiracy.
January 6 defendants across the country have been turned in by all manner of sources. Guy Reffitt, a Capitol rioter from Texas with ties to the Three Percenters militia, was turned in by his own son after he allegedly threatened to shoot family members who exposed him. Joe Heneghan, a professional poker player from Tampa, Florida, got turned in by his ex-wife. And Samuel Rodriguez of Pennsylvania accidentally turned himself in when he called the FBI's tip line to try to clear his name.
