Austin police look for new leads in deadly September 2022 stabbing
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Almost a year after a deadly stabbing downtown, police are reaching out once again to the community and asking for help in identifying the three suspects still on the run.
The homicide happened on Sept. 4, 2022, at approximately 2:34 a.m. D’Andre Isaiah Day, 27, flagged down police near East Sixth and Brazos Streets after a man stabbed him during an altercation nearby. Day later died after going to the hospital.
During a news conference Thursday afternoon, a homicide detective showed surveillance footage of the three men who police said started a fight with Day and his friend. One of the three men stabbed Day, according to APD. Officers said they believed this was an isolated incident and a random meeting.
Day's uncle, Rodney Anderson, joined the detective Thursday in saying he hopes someone will come forward with new information that can bring him and his family some closure.
"What was taken from us was joy," Anderson said while standing next to a photo of a smiling Day. "The smile, you could see it on his face. If you walked up and saw D'Andre and talked to him, I guarantee in two minutes you'd be laughing. That's the kind of kid he was."
Police are still searching for the suspects involved, and they said the men may not live in the Austin area. That's why they held the news conference to drum up more leads. Police previously released surveillance footage of the suspects and their vehicle, but they have not been able to identify the suspects.
Detective Jeffrey Rodriguez said despite this incident being a seemingly random attack, the public is not considered to be in danger.
"With the investigation being so far back in September these individuals may be from out of town," Rodriguez said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the APD homicide tip line at 512-974-TIPS. The detective noted there is a $1,000 reward through Crime Stoppers if someone can help police make an arrest.
