My ‘mini greenhouse’ gardening hack won’t cost you a cent – it uses something you’d normally chuck out

A HORTICULTURAL professional has revealed his “mini greenhouse” gardening hack that won’t cost you a cent.

Even better, this tip is sustainable because the central component is something you’d normally chuck out.

TikTok user Joe Clark used discarded egg cartons for his mini greenhouse idea

The idea comes from green-fingered enthusiast Joe Clark (@joesgarden).

Joe’s TikTok demystifies the art of growing your own food and offers: “Tips to grow fruit and veg.”

He said he was on a mission: “To help people live a more self-sufficient lifestyle, in the simplest way possible.”

But he figured this could be done in a way that was super accessible for even the most inexperienced gardeners.

“Making growing your own veggies, fruits, and herbs super simple and really fun.”

His approach has proved to be enormously popular gaining him 1.5 million followers and another 20.3 million likes.

In this post, he urged viewers to hold onto their empty plastic egg cartons.

“[Turn] empty egg cartons into a little greenhouse,” he said and began to explain how.

“Instead of throwing [them] away, poke holes in the bottom.” Once this was done, he moved on to the next stage.

“Put your soil mix in and sow your favorite seed in each hole. Give it a good water and close it up.”

In doing so he had created perfect climatic conditions for plant growth: “You’ve now created a mini greenhouse,” he wrote.

Within a week green shoots of life had begun to emerge from the dark soil.

Once this happened, Joe grabbed a piece of kitchen cutlery for the next part of the seed’s journey.

“When the seedlings are big enough scoop them out with a spoon to transplant on.”

Joe swore by his mini greenhouse idea: “It really speeds up germination and keeps out pests,” he reckoned.

His post has captured the imagination of many with over 18,000 likes, hundreds of comments, and thousands of shares.

Commenters were taken by his suggestion.

“Fantastic idea. Thank you,” was a view echoed by many more.

He gave food for thought to this fan: “I kept the container thinking it might be useful at some point. Five months later I found your video, so great. Thank you.

“Thank you this is lovely to do with kids,” said a grateful parent.

The final comment couldn’t help using a pun: “Brilliant. You’ve planted an idea for me,” they said.
