Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck claimed victory in the 181.8km flat stage between Dax and Nogaro.
However, it was something that happened next to the road which left viewers stunned.
As the riders shot past a pile of hay bales, there appeared to be one riding through the air – but it was actually a fan dangling from a digger.
The construction vehicle slowly span around as the suspended man peddled on his bike over the hay bales.
Fans were left perplexed by what they had seen, with one tweeting: “What the f*** am I watching?!”
Another commented: “You have to love the health and safety aspect of it.”
A third viewer also wrote: “This is like something out of Mario Kart.”
Philipsen later came out on top in chaotic sprint finish to win his second consecutive stage and claim the green jersey.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Adam Yates remains at the top of the general classification and keeps hold of the iconic yellow jersey.
The stage’s exciting climax saw a dramatic crash, though, as several riders were knocked on to the floor as they jostled for position.
