The US labour market continues to perform strongly, with fewer Americans applying for unemployment benefits last week, despite higher interest rates meant to reduce hiring. The Labor Department reported that jobless claims fell from 237,000 to 228,000 from 8 to 15 July. Claims were up for a period in May and June, but they have since retreated, with US employers adding jobs at a rapid pace.
