There’s been a ton of chatter about the upcoming box office showdown between Oppenheimer and Barbie, movies at opposite ends of the blockbuster spectrum both set to premiere on July 21st. Yet, while their aesthetic differences are obvious (jarringly so, when you see the posters side-by-side), the projects share more than an opening night. For starters, the films have a sizeable audience in common, leading fans to dub this coming weekend “Barbenheimer.” Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy endorsed the double feature, telling Spanish outlet La Vanguardia: “My advice would be for people to go see both, on the same day. If they are good films, then that’s cinema’s gain.” With Murphy’s stamp of approval, we’re more than happy to book two tickets; only, that leads us to another question — what’s the dress code?
Nicknamed “Barbie-core” and “Oppenheimer-core,” respectively, both premieres were fashion forward affairs. And at SHARP — since we’re passionate about style, you know — we’ve kept an eye on the leading mens’ looks. Above on the left, you’ll see former cover stars Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu sporting the flashy pastel palettes that saturate the Barbie screen; while Cillian Murphy took a sleek and subdued approach to the Oppenheimer UK premiere. Comparing the right and left looks, you’ll pick up on the style contradiction; the feature documentary honours traditional aesthetics like suspenders and slightly-oversized tailoring, while the campy comedy stars are all about tongue-in-cheek preppiness. To nail the double feature, you’ll have to take a two-pronged approach. That’s why we’ve conjured a quick guide to both fashions — plus, some only-half-kidding suggestions for layering the two looks.
Oppenheimer Style
Barbie fashion is everywhere, but the style of Christopher Nolan’s feature documentary deserves its time in the limelight, too. Fashionable looks from the midcentury setting include workwear like structured boots alongside throwback suspenders. Neutral colours and heavy fabrics — including leather, cotton, and wool — adorn the period piece.

($1,225)

Barbiecore — or Kencore, More Accurately
Ever since set photos leaked last summer, social media buzz has surrounding Barbie fashion has exploded.
