Garcia Sets Unofficial Course Record, Corvette Racing Leads Practice 2

Antonio Garcia set a new course record around Lime Rock Park, as the #3 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C8.R GTD led Practice 2 for tomorrow’s Northeast Grand Prix.

Ahead of Qualifying later this afternoon, the Spaniard set the new unofficial course record during the final 15 minutes of this 75-minute session, first with a time of 51.076 seconds. The Spaniard improved on his next three laps, eventually finishing with a time of 51.029 with five minutes to go.

That’s 0.050 seconds quicker than the current, official GTD outright lap record set in qualifying last year by Porsche driver Matt Campbell.

All five GTD Pro class cars finished in the overall top five. Jack Hawksworth was second-fastest in the championship-leading #14 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3, followed by Patrick Pilet in the #9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, Jules Gounon in the #79 WeatherTech Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, and Ross Gunn in the #23 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT3.

Inception Racing led the way in GTD courtesy of Frederik Schandorff. Schandorff finished sixth overall and best in his class with a 51.589 – and to boot, the #70 McLaren 720S GT3 EVO also completed the most laps in Practice 2.

Misha Goikhberg went second-fastest in the #78 Forte Racing by USRT Lamborghini Huracán GT3, ahead of Patrick Gallagher in the #96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3, Trent Hindman in the #77 Wright Motorsports Porsche, and Bill Auberlen in the #97 Turner BMW.

There was only a brief Red Flag early on in Practice 2, it came when Alan Metni spun off at Big Bend (turn one) and came to rest aboard his #91 Kellymoss with Riley Porsche. Metni and team-mate Kay van Berlo were able to finish the rest of the session without further incident.

Despite parts of Connecticut being under a thunderstorm watch, the inclement weather stayed away from Lime Rock Park for both practice sessions thus far – which leaves just a 15-minute Qualifying session this afternoon at 5:40 PM EDT (local time).
