Radical abortion activists today got official certification for a ballot proposal that would make abortions up to birth a constitutional right in Ohio.
The so-called Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom, a group of radical pro-abortion advocates that includes Planned Parenthood, Pro-Choice Ohio, the Abortion Fund of Ohio, and the ACLU got final approval for the language of their ballot initiative to enshrine abortion into the Ohio Constitution. The ballot measure would get a vote during this November’s election.
Ohio Right to Life released a statement on the Secretary of State’s announcement that the ACLU’s abortion amendment collected enough valid signatures and will be on the ballot this November. The pro-life group said this ballot measure would enshrine abortion until birth and remove all protections for the preborn—including a parent’s ability to stop their child from being pressured into an abortion. Additionally, it would enshrine the “right” for minors to receive harmful hormone-suppressing drugs, like Lupron, and undergo sex-change surgeries without their parent’s knowledge.
“Knowing the serious danger of this amendment and that these out-of-state special interest groups still have millions to spend to get it passed, it is even more imperative that every pro-life Ohioan votes yes on Issue 1 this August to ensure that our Constitution, our preborn, and our families are protected,” said Ohio Right to Life’s CEO, Peter Range.
Range told LifeNews “This extreme anti-life, anti-parent amendment from the ACLU provides no protections for the preborn through all nine months of pregnancy and attacks a parent’s right even to know if their child is seeking an abortion or gender surgery. Based upon the reality that the ACLU barely qualified for the ballot, despite spending millions of dollars, it is clear that a majority of Ohioans do not want this extreme amendment. We ask all Ohioans, who love life, to join us in rejecting this extreme amendment.”

Meanwhile, Protect Women Ohio (PWO) press secretary Amy Natoce was equally concerned.
She told LifeNews “Ohioans are waking up to the dangers of the ACLU’s anti-parent amendment and they are terrified – and rightfully so. The extreme amendment places parental rights on the chopping block by permitting minors to undergo abortions and sex change procedures without their parents’ knowledge or consent, removes health and safety protections for women, and allows painful abortion up until birth. PWO will continue to shine a light on the ACLU’s disastrous agenda until it is defeated in November.”
PWO has spent an initial $8 million on television, radio and digital advertisements to pass Issue 1 in August and protect Ohio’s constitution from out-of-state special interest groups, and to defeat the ACLU’s radical anti-parent initiative in November. Since May, canvassers have knocked on more than 105,000 doors educating voters about the ACLU’s extreme amendment.
For months, the ACLU and its allies have lied directly to Ohioans, claiming their dangerous ballot initiative is only about abortion and does not attack parental consent and notification requirements or apply to life-altering sex change surgeries. But PWO is exposing the radical agendas of the ACLU and its out-of-state allies fighting Issue 1 and attempting to hijack Ohio’s constitution.
In addition to allowing abortions well after babies have heartbeats and feel pain, the measure would overturn Ohio’s parental notification law when a minor seeks an abortion and eliminate the legal requirement for abortionists to follow basic hospital health and safety standards.
Center for Christian Virtue’s Ruth Edmonds told LifeNews that the amendment has to be defeated.
“This dangerous rewrite of our constitution would eliminate the basic rights of parents who would no longer need to be informed or provide consent for their minor daughter to have an abortion. It would outlaw health and safety regulations that protect women, and the proposed changes provide no protection for women who feel pressured or coerced to get an abortion. This amendment is too dangerous for Ohio.”
California, Vermont, and Michigan voted last year to add pro-abortion language to their constitutions after tens of millions in false ads were run statewide to confuse and mislead voters. Ohio pro-life advocates are concerned the same thing will happen in their state.
