A crash involving an overturned tanker truck sent three people to the hospital and closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 395 in Arlington, Virginia, leading to lengthy backups Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened about 1:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-395 near Exit 5 in the Shirlington area, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash has closed the southbound lanes of I-395 between Glebe Road and King Street, leading to big backups.

“This will have big implications for the afternoon rush hour if it doesn’t clear sooner rather than later,” said Dave Dildine in the WTOP Traffic Center.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said they estimate the road will reopen about 4 p.m.

For now, all traffic from the 14th Street Bridge and the Pentagon is being diverted off the I-395 main lanes onto Glebe Road. The 395 Express Lanes remain open with an E-ZPass.

State police said the crash caused the tanker truck to catch fire. Arlington County Fire & EMS said the truck was carrying propane, triggering a HAZMAT response.

The three people taken to the hospital have injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
