He might not be a superstar in terms of talent, but one thing is undeniable. Justin Jones is a world-class trash talker. The guy has no fear when it comes to speaking his mind on camera. There is no team and fanbase he seems to delight in firing shots at than the Green Bay Packers. He started things earlier in the off-season when he called their fans “shitty” and “obnoxious.” Jones even called half of them stupid without saying the actual world. That unsurprisingly got a reaction from Packers fans, who were more than eager to spit venom in his direction as well.
Apparently, that did nothing to scare the defensive tackle away. If anything, he’s taking an even greater delight in jabbing at them with the two teams set to square off on Sunday. He met the media again on Thursday, where he was asked about the history between the two teams. True to form, Jones was straightforward in his comment.
“Obviously, Green Bay, you want to beat them as many times as you can, just for the sake of the city. For the city of Chicago, [and] Illinois in general. This rivalry here has been going on for a long time, and we’re about to be on the other side of that now. We’re going to be the ones to give the beatdown – we’re not getting beat by them anymore, it’s going to be us from now on. So that’s kind of how I see it, and it starts Sunday.”
That is a bold statement. The Bears went 3-14 last year and haven’t beaten the Packers since 2018. One can understand if people think he’s crazy. However, Jones has the utmost confidence in this new Bears team, headlined by several new arrivals like Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, Yannick Ngakoue, DeMarcus Walker, and D.J. Moore. They have some dawgs now, and it’s going to show.
Justin Jones has nothing to lose and everything to gain.
What’s the harm in poking the bear? Chicago has lost six in a row to Green Bay. Staying silent has done nothing for the Bears during that span. Maybe it’s time to switch things up. Talking trash in public, angering their fans, and perhaps annoying some players on the other sideline even a little bit is an advantage for the Bears. Every little bit helps. If he can get certain guys to focus on him, it may help his ten other defensive teammates make a game-changing play.
One has to admire Justin Jones. He only arrived in Chicago last year and has already embraced the rivalry. The Bears need more guys like that in the locker room. They have to start treating Green Bay like more than just another game. This rivalry is a big deal because whoever has controlled it tends to find success. It was true of the Packers in the 1960s, 90s, and 2010s. It was true for the Bears in the 1980s and 2000s. Jones wants to be part of the team that ushers in a new era of Chicago dominance. Hard not to love him for that.
