Longtime Republican state Sen. Jack Sandlin, a retired police officer who represented parts of Indianapolis and its southern suburbs, has died at age 72. Sandlin's press secretary, Abbey Webb, says Sandlin died unexpectedly on Wednesday. Webb declined to give further details “out of respect for his family." Sandlin represented Senate District 36, which covers parts of southern Marion County and northern Johnson County. The Indianapolis Business Journal reports he was a retired Indianapolis police officer who served on the Indianapolis City-County Council from 2010 until he was elected to the Indiana Senate in 2016. He was reelected in 2020. Sandlin is survived by his wife Lydia, a daughter and three grandchildren.
