House Speaker Mike Johnson insists he is sticking with the bipartisan budget deal he struck with the other congressional leaders. But he has offered no clear path for overcoming hard-right opposition within his own party to prevent an impending partial government shutdown next week. On Friday Johnson emerged from days of testy closed-door Capitol meetings to read a terse statement. The new speaker says that he won't renege on the budget deal he just made. But in his first big test as the new leader, he has yet to show how he will quell the revolt from his right flank that ousted his predecessor.
