Two-term Maine governor and former U.S. Rep. Joe Brennan has died at age 89. Brennan was a Democrat whose hardscrabble childhood shaped his working-class views. He was also an Army veteran who attended Boston College under the G.I. Bill and graduated from the University of Maine Law School. A longtime friend says Brennan died Friday evening at his home in Portland with his wife at his side. That was just a few blocks from the third-floor tenement housing on Munjoy Hill where his Irish immigrant parents raised a family of eight children. Former Democratic Gov. Joe Baldacci called Brennan “a friend, a mentor and a dedicated servant.”
