Correctional officers shoot, kill inmate during transport in West Feliciana Parish
Louisiana State Police are investigating after two prison transport officers shot and killed an inmate trying to escape. State Police Lt. Jared Sandifer says it happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in West Feliciana Parish near the Mississippi state line. Catahoula Parish Sheriff Toney Edwards, in a Facebook post, says the officers stopped the van to help an inmate who had apparently faked a seizure. Edwards says the inmate managed to grab one of the officer's guns, striking both of them while the weapon was still holstered. He then dropped the gun and got into the van's driver seat to flee, but both officers were able to fire at him. The Advocate reports he died from the gunshots. It wasn't clear which officer fired the shot that killed him.
