Caleb Williams Already Found One Way To Shock The Bears Defense
The Chicago Bears are keeping expectations reasonable with Caleb Williams. Yes, he’s the #1 overall pick and that comes with plenty of hype. Even so, transitioning to the NFL is never easy. It can take time for some. Plenty of former #1 overall quarterbacks struggled early in their careers. The Bears’ job is to make the transition as smooth as possible. They’ve invested heavily in his supporting cast, surrounding him with high-end wide receivers and a stable offensive line. His new offensive coordinator has plenty of experience developing quarterbacks. The only thing left is finding out how determined he is to succeed.
It hasn’t taken long for at least one section of the team to figure that part out. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds admitted last week that while Williams is going through the typical learning process of a rookie, one thing is unmistakable. The quarterback is a ferocious competitor. He takes every practice seriously. The guy wants to win every rep. Edmunds believes that is a crucial trait that will serve him well as he prepares for the upcoming season. It certainly has helped keep the defense on their toes.
Caleb Williams apparently took Tom Brady’s advice.
At a recent event, the young quarterback got the chance to meet the future Hall of Famer. Brady spoke about one of the secrets to his long-term success in New England and Tampa Bay. A vital key in his mind was treating every single practice as if it were the Super Bowl. There could be no compromising when it came to preparation and effort. If you want to win championships, you must hold yourself to the absolute highest standards. It appears Williams embraced that lesson.
While he’s a long way from toying with defenses like Brady did, he hasn’t wasted time giving the Bears defense plenty of reasons not to ignore him. He isn’t Justin Fields. The mobility is a problem, but Caleb Williams carries it a step further with his ability to throw with anticipation and accuracy. Edmunds’ admission suggests the defense isn’t treating him like some kid who doesn’t know anything. Williams is already earning their respect by taking his lumps and giving it back in equal measure.
