The Chicago Bears knew that if they were going to get Caleb Williams off the ground as a rookie, they’d have to surround him with reliable pass-catchers. D.J. Moore and Cole Kmet were already in place. That was a good start, but more was needed. Uncertain of what to expect in the upcoming draft, GM Ryan Poles opted to explore the trade market. He was soon surprised to find out that six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen was available, and the Los Angeles Chargers could no longer pay his salary. Chicago flipped them a 4th round pick for his rights.
Just like that, the Bears have assembled arguably the best receiving corps they’ve had since at least 2013. If Rome Odunze, their 9th overall pick, is the real deal? It could be the best ever. One thing is already becoming clear through two practices. Allen is still that guy. The veteran star made his presence felt multiple times during the second day of practice, including a big 3rd and 10 conversion for a first down that kept a two-minute drive alive. Those are the kinds of things he became famous for in Los Angeles. It’s clear he already has Williams’ trust, which is crucial.
Day 2 of Bears training camp just wrapped. Rome Odunze was back but limited. Braxton Jones and TJ Edwards were limited. Marcedes Lewis, Nsimba Webster, and Noah Sewell did not practice.
Caleb Williams was quick and decisive in 7-7 and found Keenan Allen several times in 11-11.…
#Bears Sunday. 2 minute drill. (Starting on their own 10) Caleb Williams hit Keenan Allen for a 1st down on 3rd and 10 to keep the drive alive, but a couple plays later, Tyrique Stevenson picked Williams. Best touch from Caleb came in 7 on 7 on a nice deep ball to Tyler Scott.
For one, people are calling him too old to still impact the NFL as he has for the past decade. No self-respecting competitor ever wants to hear that. Also, Allen is in the last year of his current contract. If he wants one more big payday before it’s too late, he must deliver a strong season with the Bears. One reason no extension has happened at this point is his health history. Allen has missed 12 games with various ailments over the past three seasons. Chicago can’t be sure they can trust him to make it through a full year, which is why they’ve decided to postpone talks.
Many experts believe this is a one-and-done situation. Keenan Allen will play this season in Chicago, hopefully produce, and then leave as a free agent next spring. The Bears will then move forward with Moore and Odunze. If that is how it goes, fans should make sure to enjoy his time here. Players of his caliber haven’t come through Halas Hall too often over the years. If he helps them get back to the playoffs, it will easily be one of the best cameos in franchise history.
