Teven Jenkins Is Already Extremely Protective Of Caleb Williams
You can always tell whether a quarterback is a capable leader or not by how his offensive linemen treat him. If they are formal in their comments about him and don’t always help him up off the ground, that is an indicator the QB might not be the best at fostering loyalty. Caleb Williams doesn’t have that problem. He once donated a lucrative commercial ad offered to him to his offensive line at USC. You can understand why each of those guys raved about their quarterback at every opportunity. It appears Teven Jenkins is falling into the same category.
The Bears’ left guard has enjoyed a largely injury-free training camp (knock on wood). This has allowed him to get a front-row seat for how Williams operates, both as a passer and leader. This time together has only lasted a few months, but it already sounds like Jenkins is willing to take on a Siberian tiger to protect his quarterback. His comments to start his latest presser this week indicated as much. Jenkins stated that while he isn’t the biggest fan of the preseason, he will play as many snaps as required as long as it means protecting Williams.

Protecting the quarterback is paramount to the success of the franchise. He’s never experienced a winning season in his time with the Bears. However, it is also essential to get yourself paid. If Williams plays well this season, it will likely come from adequate protection. If the Bears recognize that, it means Jenkins will get the extension he’s hoping for. Don’t forget he is a free agent next year. The team hasn’t been willing to discuss a deal, knowing his track record of injuries. He’s missed 20 games in his career thus far.
It is good to see Teven Jenkins already showing such protectiveness of Williams. It means he’s seeing the same things other teammates are. The kid has special qualities. If he and the rest of the line do their jobs, the Bears are going to win a lot of football games. The good news is the left side appears secure with Jenkins and Braxton Jones. It is the right side, especially the guard spot with the eternally absent Nate Davis, that has people concerned. Keep an eye on Ryan Bates to take over if that continues.
