Six hitters Bassett off to a Flyer

Royal Wootton Bassett Town's winning start to the season continued as Adam Wood's side thumped Downend Flyers 6-0 in their opening home game of the South West Regional Women's Football League Division One North campaign.

The victory made it three wins from three games in all competitions - with another strong attacking display and a second consecutive clean sheet leaving Bassett as one of only teams (the other being Gloucester City) to possess a 100% record in the early reckoning.

A quickfire three goal salvo in the final stages of the opening period proved decisive, allowing Bassett to be comfortably ahead at the break despite the opening half hour having been relatively even.

Club stalwart Amber Egerton broke the deadlock - and the floodgates - though. Good play from Holly Baker allowed Maddy Elliott to recycle a Laura Jefferies corner, and an unmarked Egerton was on hand to head home.

Elliott quickly doubled Bassett's advantage, firing home after good build up play from Emma Sykes.

And, almost instantly, two became three. Honor Fraser darted pasted two Downend defenders before teeing up Elliott. The forward's initial shot was blocked, but she was quickest to react to the rebound and coolly slotted in.

Downend did almost pull one back on the stroke of half time, but 'keeper Millie Powell did brilliantly to tip a free kick onto the bar before instinctively smothering the rebound.

After the restart Bassett then pulled away.

Just after the hour Kat Bach drew a foul in a dangerous area and Jefferies fired the free kick off the underside of the bar and into the back of the net.

Ten minutes later Sykes was brought down on the edge of the box. And this time new signing Cara Sommerville stepped up to take the free kick and duly curled a fine effort in off the left post.

Shortly after Lucy Goodright completed the scoring. Bach did well to keep the ball alive after an Elliott delivery into the box and she picked out Goodright who, with her first touch after entering the field of play, steered in.

Bassett's clean sheet did come under threat late on but a last ditch Jasmine Kennedy block and a composed Powell save in a one-on-one situation kept that intact.

Goodright then almost added a seventh at the other end, but her shot rattled the woodwork after she had latched onto Darcy Cox's through ball.
