The California Labor Commissioner’s Office sometimes struggles to get back pay to workers when it reaches wage theft settlements. It tries social media, TV and hotlines. But money owed to several employees is still sitting in state accounts. It's been nearly a year since the state settled a major wage theft case with The Cheesecake Factory, and a spokesperson for the Labor Commissioner’s Office said 42 of the former janitors who worked for the restaurant chain’s contractors have received their cut of the $1 million settlement. More than 500 workers haven’t been found, leaving nearly $700,000 in state accounts. Officials say sometimes it is hard to track down workers, but that's not always the case.
