Odds For Top Chicago Bears Coach Candidate Just Shifted Dramatically
The Chicago Bears have plenty of homework to do before they hire their next head coach. GM Ryan Poles and team president Kevin Warren will let Thomas Brown make his case over the next five weeks while they conduct extensive research on potential candidates. Everybody is talking about Ben Johnson up in Detroit, but he’s not the only prominent name. One that continues to get thrown around lately is Kliff Kingsbury. The former Arizona Cardinals head coach is having a resurgence in Washington. Many feel he’s eager to reunite with Caleb Williams, who he worked with at USC.
Multiple insiders have already mentioned the idea. Is Kingsbury an early favorite? SearSTower, a prominent Twitter profile that has provided tons of accurate info over the past few weeks, had an update on that front. In a word, it’s all BS. Any of this buzz you’re hearing is almost exclusively generated by Kingsbury’s agent.
If you don’t believe that, an update from ESPN might help. Jeremy Fowler dropped some interesting information that should help clarify how the Bears feel about Kingsbury.
Graziano: If you’re trying to assess the validity of Warren’s claim, you have to ask, “If that job isn’t going to be the most coveted, which one will be?” I think candidates will be interested in the idea of Caleb Williams and of potentially winning big in a market like Chicago, where kids still dress as Mike Ditka on Halloween. I’m also curious about the buzz in Chicago around Kliff Kingsbury if the Bears can’t get Detroit OC Ben Johnson…
…Fowler: I suspect Kingsbury will be a candidate in Chicago, which might be his best chance. The Bears already have intel on him after interviewing him twice to be their offensive coordinator in January.
The Chicago Bears clearly don’t think much of Kingsbury.
Keep this in mind. They interviewed him twice. He had direct ties to Williams, who they planned to draft #1 overall. Yet they still ended up going with Shane Waldron instead as the offensive coordinator. What could possibly have changed since then that would convince them he’s the right choice for a head coach? Yes, he’s done good work this season with Jayden Daniels. The responsibilities go beyond just the quarterback. Kingsbury has already been a head coach twice in his career. He went 35-40 in college with Texas Tech and 28-37 with the Arizona Cardinals. Don’t forget he had Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray for the majority of those runs. Why should anybody believe he will become capable of winning more games with the Chicago Bears? Anybody with common sense can see it’s a pointless venture.
