The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and an oil industry trade group are suing Vermont over its new law requiring that fossil fuel companies pay a share of the damage caused by climate change. The federal lawsuit filed Monday asks a court to prevent the state from enforcing the law. Vermont became the first state to enact the law after it suffered catastrophic summer flooding and damage from other extreme weather. Later this month, the Vermont state treasurer is expected to issue a report assessing the total cost to Vermonters and the state from the emission of greenhouse gases from 1995 to 2024.
