New York's first female lieutenant governor, Mary Anne Krupsak, has died at age 92

The first woman to serve as lieutenant governor of New York has died. Mary Ann Krupsak was 92 when she died at home in Geneva, New York, on Saturday. She was elected lieutenant governor in 1974, becoming the first woman voted in to statewide office in New York. Krupsak served one term with Gov. Hugh Carey before announcing that she would challenge him for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 1978. She lost in the primary. Krupsak was born in Schenectady and received a law degree from the University of Chicago. She served in both the state Assembly and Senate before running for lieutenant governor.
