Firefighters are scrambling to corral flames churning along hillsides in Los Angeles as winds have gained strength across Southern California. The fire that swiftly consumed part of the Pacific Palisades neighborhood sent residents fleeing down the clogged Pacific Coast Highway. Nearly 26,000 people in more than 10,000 households and more than 13,000 structures are under threat from the blaze, said Kristin Crowley, fire chief of the LA Fire Department. California Gov. Gavin Newsom says many structures have already been destroyed. Officials say the worst of the winds are expected overnight. Forecasters have predicted the windstorm would last for days.
