Riot police were out in force in Venezuela’s capital Thursday looking to quell protesters seeking to block President Nicolás Maduro’s attempt to cling to power despite credible evidence that he lost last summer’s election by a landslide The National Assembly controlled by government loyalists is scheduled to swear in Maduro on Friday to another six-year term. The U.S.-backed opposition has called for mass protests to block that from happening. Turnout by midday Thursday was small as many Venezuelans who've watched as security forces in recent months jail opponents decided to stay home.
