Witnesses have described standing helplessly and paralyzed by the horror of people screaming for help or jumping out of windows as flames tore through a 12-story hotel at a popular ski resort. The fire at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalya in the Koroglu mountains on Tuesday left at least 76 people dead and 51 injured. One woman said the guests were calling for firefighters and breaking the windows. She said, "Some could no longer stand the smoke and flames, and they jumped.” People also rushed to bring mattresses for those escaping the fire to jump onto or propped up ladders against the wall to help them escape.
